In place of using words (which I’m not very good at), I made a three-shot short film to do the heavy lifting of helping me illustrate just how and why she is such an important person who I want in my life forever. The basic concept is a depiction of the three most important days of our lives together so far: the day we met (I was a Lyft driver, she was my passenger); the day we adopted our dog (it took him a couple weeks to get in the backpack, but he does love coming along on bike rides); and the day I proposed. I had some photo references of the AirBNB in Joshua Tree we would be staying at, so I was able to manufacture the moment on screen long before we ever sat out there to watch the Thanksgiving sunset. I knew from the instant I came up with the idea to make a film that I wanted that moment where the narrative seamlessly blended into reality. Vorhees - “Black Horse Pike” 2019Adobe After Effects/Adobe Photoshop &nbsp; &nbsp; &nbsp; &nbsp; &nbsp; &nbsp; A short film about memory, sensory emotions, and things that just aren’t the same as they used to be. Black Horse Pike is my second serious foray into animation, and was in progress from the very end of 2018 to the end of 2019. Although I personally have terrible rhythm and can’t sing to save my life, I am deeply inspired by the emotions of music, and certain songs give me a feeling that I have to create a visual pairing. Sometimes, upon the first play I am given an almost fully realized story, beginning as narrative tendrils that are stitched together upon sequential listens. “Black Horse Pike”, by Vorhees, is one of those deeply special pieces of music that gave me that feeling. Sapphire Slows - “Confession” 2018Adobe After Effects/Adobe Photoshop &nbsp; &nbsp; &nbsp; &nbsp; &nbsp;A red-eye pilot longs for solace on a lonely flight. &nbsp; Confession is a short film/music video project that took five years to materialize and two years to create. I began thinking seriously about transitioning my personal efforts to animation full-time shortly after I graduated from college in 2015. However, it took several years to modernize and build my skills to a place where I felt they could accurately visualize the ideas I had. Confession is the first full manifestation of that idea.&nbsp; All drawing, texturing, lighting, character design, sound design and animation was done by me. Sapphire Slows is an artist I greatly admire and I had been trying in various capacities to make a visual to her music since 2013. I am really proud that this video is what finally came to pass. Mike Gravel 2020 / The War on Drugs ‘‘ Adobe After Effects/Adobe Photoshop &nbsp; &nbsp; &nbsp; &nbsp; &nbsp; &nbsp; In honor of April 20th, the upstart Mike Gravel 2020 presidential campaign wanted to put out content that made very clear Gravel’s stance on current American marijuana policy as well as his ideal. I was brought on board to make an animated video as part of the push. The brief was very loose, with key terms being “authentic” and “ironic in its meaninglessness”. “Like you can't believe you just watched that.” This allowed me to very freely explore a lot of ideas in shots and tones that otherwise might be tampered by strict content guidelines. This video is a real piece of a presidential campaign real enough to make the Emerson poll. WhatsApp / Privacy In Your Hands ‘‘ Adobe After Effects &nbsp; &nbsp; &nbsp; &nbsp; &nbsp; &nbsp; I was hired by agency 3Q Digital to direct a short, easy-to-watch video highlighting WhatsApp’s in-app privacy features.&nbsp; I was presented with a script for on-screen text, a loose story outline (we follow a character throughout his day), and a character sketch (Hugo - a man in his 20s) and filled in the narrative, details, and shot list myself. We ended up with a fun, high energy video that depicts the features with an airy effortlessness designed to mimic that of the features themselves. This video ended up being translated into over a dozen languages for many of WhatsApp’s international markets. Additionally, we made a second version specifically for the Egypt market as video calling is not available in that region. Lyra / This Is Lyra &nbsp; &nbsp; &nbsp; &nbsp; &nbsp; &nbsp; &nbsp; Adobe After Effects &nbsp; &nbsp; &nbsp; &nbsp; &nbsp; &nbsp; Upstart sales-management platform Lyra tasked me with creating an animated video that would serve as their debut to the world alongside their product launch. With my writing partner Kelly Hering, a laundry list of features and capabilities was boiled down into a digestible and clear 3-minute explainer that introduced the Lyra platform to potential users. All art assets were created based off of updating-by-the-minute Figma files, standard startup fare but a unique challenge to craft our narrative around.From a technical angle, this project was very multi-dimensional: a lot of work in 3D space, light character animation with Joysticks’n’Sliders, and even some additional Lottie delivery files that made it in to the platform itself.In addition to art direction and animation, I also functioned as a producer on this project, an exciting step in my career as an animator. Fellow Americans ‘‘ ‘‘Adobe After Effects &nbsp; &nbsp; &nbsp; &nbsp; &nbsp;&nbsp; Since 2020, I have been hired by my friends at Rope Line Media to direct and animate three 30-second spots for left-wing media non-profit&nbsp;Fellow Americans. “Saved by Science” tells the story of a vaccine skeptic who has been convinced by the benefits that getting vaccinated afforded her life. The script and voiceover were set when I joined the project, but all character design and directorial decisions were my own. The project took about 3 weeks to complete and premiered in July of 2021. “Two Coronas” is about the coronavirus pandemic for left-wing media non-profit&nbsp; Rope Line provided the script and content, character design and pacing were all decisions left up to me. Due to the rapid evolving nature of current events, this project had to be extremely quick and nimble. From our kickoff meeting to full animation delivery, this video came together in 13 days. It premiered on Fellow Americans’ social media channels on April 9th, squarely in the center of the pandemic’s peak in the United States. “I Miss You” is told from the perspective of a daughter writing a letter to her father, expressing concern for his development of alt-right political views. I was given the loose concept and a voiceover script, and it was my job to storyboard, design, illustrate, and direct the final product. Start-to-finish, the project was completed in about 3 weeks.Overall, it was a joy to be able to work professionally in a narrative, illustrated style. Getting a chance to explore and solve aesthetic problems like aging characters and telling the story in such a short amount of time were welcome challenges, and I am quite proud of the result. <img VICE News / “The Search for Q” ‘‘Adobe After Effects &nbsp; &nbsp; &nbsp; &nbsp; &nbsp; &nbsp; In late 2020 I was asked by Bubba’s LA if I was up for a cool project with a ridiculous timeline. They were working on branding VICE TV’s new docuseries The Search For Q and the director had a vision for an animated sequence to kick off the second episode.&nbsp; I was given a loose script and some style inspiration and the ability to direct and illustrate it to my taste. The result was a breakneck 65-second deluge of sight and sense depicting, in a truncated and stylized manner, the history of the QAnon movement.
